Fourth network meeting at Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum, Brandenburg
The fourth network meeting was held at the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum on September 15. In the morning, we broke up into two groups and explored the memorial grounds and exhibitions through the theme of “ambiguity tolerance in educational work at historical sites.” Arne Pannen, the educational director, and Anja Thuns, a staff member of the education department, spoke at different sites and discussed the challenges they faced. They addressed questions such as how to deal with older exhibitions that are no longer in touch with the current viewing and reading habits of visitors. In the exhibition on Jewish prisoners, for example, antisemitic images are shown without sufficient context. New interventions developed in projects—such as in the exhibition on persecuted Sinti and Roma—showed that it is possible to makes successful changes that broaden perspectives and visualize discrimination.
After the lunch break, Anne Goldenbogen from Bildung im Widerspruch e.V. provided input on this topic, which was followed by a lively discussion. She presented criteria for educational work that supports constructive work on ambiguity tolerance and sensitivity in addressing antisemitism.
In conclusion, the participants shared their experiences on the topic in small groups. In the plenary session, challenges and issues that had not yet been discussed were addressed.
The day ended with positive feedback and a look ahead to the last networking event of 2025.
